Light Painting

E-mail Print PDF

Light painting, also known as light drawing is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a light source or by moving the camera.

In this photo-tip we will move the light source(s) in order to paint with light. The light can either be used to selectively illuminate parts of the subject or to "paint" a picture by shining it directly into the camera lens. Light painting requires a sufficientlyslowshutter speed, usually a second or more.

Gradiant Edges

Now if we have the same effect of this filter, all around, wouldn’t that look nice? I think so. But you’ll have to prove me wrong to say no. So, come on, let’s do it.

The Rule of Thirds cropping

The Rule of Thirds cropping - ruleRule:
“The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in photography.

The rule states that an image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. The four points formed by the intersections of these lines can be used to align features in the photograph. [...] Aligning a photograph with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the photo than simply centering the feature would.”

Composition !
The rule of thirds is widely known by artists, Graphic Designers, and photographers. It is a tool to be used in laying out or composing their pieces in a certain way that would be aesthitically pleasing.

Capture the Light !
Knowing that a photograph is as simple as a piece of light captured on a film, we can then play around it  generating a lot of creative, fun, and amazing things resulting a “party.” :)

The concept of this “party” is all about long shutter speed; with movement. If you remember the “ghost” tip we covered in the previuos issue, thid is very close in principle to this one.

Silhouette It!

Silhouette It! IdeaIdea

Solar Eclipse!
The concept of a silhouette picture is exactly like the scene of a solar eclipse, an eclipse is a natural silhouette.

It is all about contrast created by placement. When a light source is exactly behind the object/person you are shooting, an outline of it/him will be captured, that’s a silhouette.
